Diving Safety
"No other sport requires the participants to completely immerse themselves in an environment that is not designed to support human life without assistance."
Considering this, diving is very safe - there are relatively few incidents each year compared to the number of divers in the world.
Club Safety
- all our equipment is serviced at the required intervals;
- we have strict maintenance schedules on kit such as tanks and regulators
- the club owns essential safety equipment including an O2 kit and a VHF radio for the boat;
- all the club diving is carried out according BSAC Safe Diving Practices;
- and we regularly take advice from our Regional and Area Coaches.
Safe Diving
There are a few things that you can do to keep yourself safe, this list isn't exhaustive but will serve as a guide:
- Diving according to how you've been trained.
- Asking yourself if you are fit, qualified and dived up to the dive.
- Avoiding (or limiting!) drinking before you dive.
- Taking an independant gas supply (ie a pony cylinder).
- Planning the Dive and Diving the Plan.
- Agreeing your plan with the Dive Manager and your buddy before you get it.
- Analysing your gas.
- Doing a proper buddy check.
- Keeping track of your buddy underwater (maybe use a buddy line).
- Making sure you know where the O2 Kit is.
- Having an afternoon off in the middle of a series of dives.
- Diving Nitrox to reduce your tissue loading.
